also. would it be better to be a necro/mes or a mes/necro? or does it make any difference? i am kinda leaning towards focusing on blood magic/domination/illusion. does that sound good?
as you can probably see i am new to this game and desperately need some expert advice.
once again, thanks

I currently have a W/N at lvl 15 and I really couldn't think of any better combo.
It's a primary tank class, and if and when my health ever does get low I just use Blood well or any other number of health recharging skills and get it back up there. Usually hit them with suffering or something of the like right off the bat. I wouldn't exactly say that Nec's are amazing against warriors, but they do have an advantage. Try to hang back in PvP and either act as a secondary healer or secondary caster. It's basically trial and error with your skills in order to find out what role you like to play best. Nec's are really diverse though.
Good luck.

well i think you should go mezmer/necro personally as the unique attribute for necros is crap compared to the mezmer one (in pvp) but in Pve I guess the necro attribute can be nice but that's all.
As a Mezmer Necro there are many ways you can go, you can look into getting all the Health Degeneration spells and then just lay em in to your opponent, then steal your opponents mana when you are low on mana and then lay on some more
or there are certain spells that really own warriors both for necros and mezmers, i'm sure if you combined them, any warrior would fear you.
I'm more than likely going to change my mezmer's secondary profession to necro once I go ascension.
You could even play a totally supportive role with all those nifty necro group spells and the mezmers have a few support spells as well like removing hexes from allies.

Go mes/nec imho.
You would make a good monk counter in PvP.
Fast casting really helps with the interrupt type spells. And the number of corpses you have to exploit in pvp makes soul reaping less meaningful.

I agree that you would probably be better off going Mes/Nec for the fast casting if you intend on using many mes skills (many of them take 2-3 secs to cast without the fast casting).
Blood and curses go well with mesmer skills.
However I play a Nec/Mes but that is cause i just took the mes cause i couldn't think of anything else i wanted and thought i would try it since i hadn't played one. and i wanted to go with mostly all necro skills, and i like the way they look better than mesmers.

I wish I could just pick a look, despite my primary .

Personally, I like Necro/Mes because SR is actually useful in pvp when you kill someone and gain abit of energy back to use another spell to gain energy.
